The Truth About Pu-Erh Tea
Over the last few years, Pu-Erh tea has made its way onto the shelves of avid tea drinkers and into the hands of celebrities like Joss Stone and Victoria Beckham. Pu-Erh tea has been known and appreciated for its ability to treat a variety of health issues, including anything from blood cleansing to weight loss, although turns out, the story of Pu-Erh tea has gone far beyond.
Blast from the past
Carrying the name “antique tea” in China, the history of the tea is quite unique. It was actually produced by accident during exporting the already compressed and aged Pu-Erh tea. Various fermentation methods and compressed shapes were altered to make the transport easier. The Pu-Erh tea ended up being stored for a while and exposed to air, but turned out to taste better that way.
And also, with its round shape and ruby tea color, it caught the Emperor’s attention. Pu-Erh tea then became a gift to the royal court and has become a high value tea in China ever since.
Storing Pu-Erh tea
Just like fine wine, Pu-Erh tea appears to be improved with age. It can be stored for over 100 years.
Storing Pu-Erh tea is easy. The best place to keep it is in a dry place, away from direct sun and odors (the tea absorbs smells and it can affect the flavor of the tea). If you intend to store it long term for more than 5 years, it’s best to leave it in the original packaging.
Health Benefit
It’s also worth pointing out that although Pu-Erh tea contains caffeine, it is less caffeine than other teas. If you think Green Tea has less caffeine than Black Tea, PuErh has even less. Although it contains caffeine, Pu-Erh won’t disturb your sleep. The caffeine works by stimulating your central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), heart and muscles, while the antioxidants contained protect your heart and blood vessels.
Asides from that, Pu-Erh tea also has high contents of natural nutritional elements, such as protein, amino acids, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamin C and vitamin E.
